The deepest essence of KAIZEN is in respecting humanity

Posted by PASI JULKUNEN

In the two previous Kaizen information attacks, we received information about the effectiveness of Kaizen and its organization, i.e. the KAI half. Now we dive into the ZEN section, i.e. growth as a person. Continuous development of work and growth as a person can be seen as productivity and innovation ability. In the future, in the complex world of information, human ability will have a growing importance. The growth of automation and the Artificial Intelligence Leap require systematically managed Kaizen thinking to succeed. If this is not included in future work, we will be left at the feet of increasing costs and unprofitability. Technology needs thinking people as friends.

Machinist's path - solutions to the skills shortage

Posted by PASI JULKUNEN

The machinist's path opens one solution channel to the skills shortage, which is gathered from machinists' tacit knowledge of real life, combined with theory and awakening the dormant potential of education. With a high probability, this kind of approach reaching from the roots upwards has not been seen in the world before. The machinist's path is also a token of appreciation for metal professionals, even with all possible defects. The company's management, on the other hand, opens up a view of the systematic management of expertise and its connection to productivity.

How customer value help to achieve cost control?

Posted by PASI JULKUNEN

This practical and simple example continues the deep dive into customer-driven cost control. The example is kept simple enough just to focus on the Value Engineering method.

Calculating customer value is one of the most important cost management skills when planning costs out of the product. Thus, care is taken that prioritized customer needs influence the solutions. Solutions made without analytics are often unable to keep balanced customer needs at the center, instead the technical solution becomes an absolute value.

In previous two articles Pentti Enlund has described target cost setting and Value Analysis & Value Engineering (VA/VE) Process. In this article he is starting the deep dive journey to design-cost-out tools. Customer value will guide systematically function analysis, too. Traditional cost reduction process asks: "How we can reduce cost?", but VA/VE set two questions: "How the product or function acts ", and next: "How we can design the product with better customer value as well as with Simplified functionality?”. This article is in Finnish.

COST MANAGEMENT DURING THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE PRODUCT

COST MANAGEMENT DURING THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE PRODUCT

The phenomenon of time is the increase in costs and the reliability of supply chains. Digitalization and the green transition especially increase cost risks during a long life cycle if they are built in a short span. Easy cost-cutting measures have often been taken. What remains is an invisible and incomprehensible area that needs its own tools and know-how.

Identifying opportunities based on the results of the FAST analysis (Pentti Enlund)

How to make a connection between a feature and a cost? A simple example of a coffee bean grinder. In fact, Pentti Enlund did a thorough analysis by buying a bean mill and taking it apart, but the cost basis is more of an extrapolation based on experienced engineering skills. FAST analysis and ideation shake hands with features that are constantly related to customer needs.
